Enw’r gân yw Llofruddiaeth Hannah Davies, ac mae’n sôn am hanes merch ifanc a lofruddiwyd gan ei chariad, Dafydd Evans, ar Fynydd Pencarreg.
Mae’r stori’n dal i fod yn adnabyddus i bobl yr ardal, yn arbennig felly gan iddi gael ei throi yn raglen deledu gan Bethan Phillips fel rhan o’r gyfres boblogaidd, Dihirod Dyfed.
Cafodd Hannah ei lladd nos Sadwrn 13 Mehefin 1829, ac yn ôl adroddiadau, “…deuwyd o hyd i gorff briwedig y ferch anffodus ar Fynydd Pencarreg gan rai pobl ar eu ffordd i le o addoliad y bore canlynol, mewn afonig fechan, dyfroedd yr hon oeddynt wedi eu lliwio gan ei gwaed am tua dwy filltir.”
Disgrifiad gwaedlyd iawn o ddigwyddiad erchyll iawn. Wrth droi at dudalennau’r Carmarthen Journal and South Wales Weekly Advertiser ar 25 Medi 1829, cawn hanes ei ddienyddiad.
“On Monday the extreme penalty of the law was carried into effect on David Evans, for the wilful murder of Hannah Davies, on the drop in the County Gaol, in the presence of at least 10,000 spectators.”
Cyn ei grogi, cyfaddefodd Dafydd Evans i’r drosedd erchyll, gan gymryd cyfrifoldeb llawn am ei weithred a derbyn ei gosb. Ond, nid dyma ddiwedd y stori. Ni lwyddwyd i’w grogi ar y cynnig cyntaf, ac fel yr adroddwyd yn y papur newydd ar y pryd, “… and the drop fell; but by one of those accidents which the utmost foresight cannot always prevent, the apparatus for his suspension gave way, and the shock the harrowed feelings of the assembled thousands received at this untoward event, was evidenced in a groan “not loud but deep.” He fell on the platform, but did not receive any material hurt. The scene at this moment was of a painfully distressing character.”
Roedd Dafydd Evans yn credu’i fod wedi’i achub, na fyddai’n cael ei grogi wedi’r cyfan, ac yn ôl y papur, “he exclaimed in broken English, “No hang again! No! no! no! Gentlemen, was no hang twice for same thing,” cyn ymbil yn y Gymraeg na ddylai gael ei ‘gosbi’ am yr eildro am yr un drosedd.
Ond, ‘doedd dim troi’n ôl a dim achubiaeth i’w gael i Dafydd Evans. Roedd y gŵr ifanc i’w grogi y diwrnod hwnnw. Meddai’r adroddiad, “He resisted the re-execution of the sentence, until he saw that force would be resorted to, when he again ascended the drop, and was launched into eternity without a struggle. After remaining suspended for an hour, he was cut down, and after being dissected was placed in a coffin. He was left open to public inspection, and thousands availed themselves of the permission given to view the mortal remains of this ill-fated young man.”
Dipyn o stori, a hanes a ddaeth yn fyw yn y gân hon a berfformir gan Gwilym Bowen Rhys yma.
